Vivability is pleased to announce that the Development Application (DA) for the transformation of the former Bathurst District Ambulance Station into its new headquarters has been formally approved by Bathurst Regional Council. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era for one of Bathurst’s most iconic civic buildings. A place that has long served the community and will continue to do so in a new way.
Internal works have now commenced to sensitively adapt the 1929 building, preserving its architectural character while making it fit for purpose as a modern hub for disability support, social enterprise and community connection.
Board Chair Tony Eviston said the approval represents both a strategic and historical milestone for the organisation “This project reflects the board’s long-term vision to create room for Vivability to grow. Vivability is investing a minimum of $1.5 million dollars, financed through Westpac, to transform the building into a long-term community asset. Rental reductions offset some of this investment in a community asset, and we are proud to be investing in the future of our organisation and the Bathurst community.”
Vivability CEO Nick Packham said the organisation was excited to begin the next phase of works “The DA approval marks a major milestone in realising Vivability’s long-term vision and represents a significant investment in our future and in Bathurst. This space will become the heart of our organisation, a place where people with disabilities, staff, families and the broader community can come together. We are proud to be custodians of this historic site and to continue its legacy of service with dignity.”
Vivability plans to retain the building’s original features while upgrading facilities to meet accessibility standards. Once complete, the space will serve as a base for the leadership team, frontline coordination staff, community programs, and a fourth social enterprise, St. John’s Café and Wine Bar.
The new headquarters is expected to open in late 2026, coinciding with Vivability’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
